JANUARY 1, 2016

I did it!

I made a Thing-a-Day every day of 2015!

Sometimes I fell behind a few days.

Sometimes I worked ahead a few days (like now, I made this two days ahead of time).

2015 was a hard year for a lot of people. Me too.

Nothing too horrible happened to me. I didn't lose anybody I love. I didn't lose any limbs. I didn't get fired.

It was just a lot of little bummers that added up to make for a less-than-enjoyable year.

ON TO 2016!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

This year I am not going to make a Thing-a-Day.

I plan to try to put up at least one article a week, but we'll see.

I'll still make Things and put them up. but it won't be every day.

Looking back, I made a lot of things. Some good. Some not good.

I think the best Thing I made was the Oatmeal Puppet Guy.

Day 365!!!!! - Young Aspiring... - 12/31/2015

Today's Thing-a-Day Final Thing of the Year is...

Take THAT, OLD NAVY!

Seriously, be an artist if you want.

That's it! A whole year of Things!

Day 364! - MisterSeth song "Trains and Helicopters!" - 12/30/2015

Today's Thing-a-Day is another new MisterSeth Song!

From youtube:

A song I wrote today! It was inspired by all of the Thomas the Tank Engine books the toddlers I teach want me to read!

Trains and Helicopters! (x 3)
Happen to be best friends!

Trains and Helicopters! (x 3)
Happen to be best friends!

Planes and City Buses! (x 3)
Are distantly related cousins!

Planes and City Buses! (x 3)
Are distantly related cousins.

And when they all get together for a family reunion it's a giant traffic jam!

Trains and Helicopters! (x 3)
Just so happen to be the best of friends!

Tomorrow is the last Day of my Year of Thing-a-Day Things!

(I'll probably make and upload it tonight so it's there tomorrow when I'm out and away from things I can make Things with).

Day 363 - The Colors of the Vegetables! by MisterSeth - 12/29/2015

Today's Thing-a-Day is a MisterSeth song called "The Colors of the Vegetables!"

From youtube:

This is a song that was inspired by the book "Red Pepper Yellow Squash" from Scholastic Books!

You can buy it here: http://store.scholastic.com/Books/Boa...

The order of the colors in the song came from the book too!

Lyrics:

Red Purple Yellow Green White Brown Orange! (x 3)
These are the colors of the vegetables!

Black and Blue (x 3)
are not included.

Red Purple Yellow Green White Brown Orange! (x 3)
These are the colors of the vegetables!

Pink and Grey (Gray) (x 3)
are not included.

Red Purple Yellow Green White Brown Orange! (x 3)
These are the colors of the vegetables!

oh

Red Purple Yellow Green White Brown Orange! (x 3)
These are the colors of the vegetables!

He's got a modern life.

Day 360 - Day After Christmas! (a poem) - 12/26/2015

Today's Thing-a-Day Thing is a poem!

The day after Christmas

the magic is gone

I know it's still Christmas

but it's time to move on.

A new year is starting

and soon it will be

time for the trashmen

to pick up the tree.

Day 355 - 10 Novelty Christmas Songs! - 12/21/2015

Today's Thing-a-Day Thing is a list of 10 Novelty Christmas Songs!

I've done nonreligious and religious, now I wanna do the silly ones that we like because they are silly!

1. Christmas At Ground Zero! - Weird Al Yankovic

also this one:

I love Weird Al!

2. Carols of the Bells - Brian Posehn

I just saw this one the other day! It's just awful and I love it!

3. 12 Days of Christmas - Bob and Doug McKenzie

I remember kids in my elementary school classes laughing like crazy as we listened to this tape. I didn't like it very much at the time, but now I think it's wonderful.

4. I Wish It Was Christmas Today - the SNL guys!

It's so dumb it became an instant classic.

5. It's Christmas in Heaven - Monty Python!

God I love Monty Python!

6. Happy Holidays You Bastard - Blink 182/Ben Folds!

This one has ample naughty language!

I loved Blink 182 when they were making albums and look forward to the new one with Matt Skiba!

Ben Folds is one of the musicians that constantly vies for the top spot in my favorites..

7. Santa Clause is Watchin You - Ray Stevens

Dumb and fun. Perfect for this list.

8. Christmas Will Be Soon - Lemon Demon (Neil Cicierega)

The whole I AM BECOME CHRISTMAS album is great. You should go listen to the whole thing!

9. Skank For Christmas - Reel Big Fish

RBF's Christmas Album is also excellent.

Reel Big Fish is my favorite band.

10. Santa Baby! - Eartha Kitt

My favorite version of the song!

It's so good it inspired me to make a parody.

That's it!

All that's left is a list of all the Christmas songs I've written/recorded!

Soon.

Soon.

Day 354 - Water Drawing! - 12/20/2015

Today's Thing-a-Day Thing is a Water Drawing!

We were eating breakfast when I noticed the shapes in the middle of the drawing (what looked to me like a mouth, nose, eyes, and mop of hair) and added the round head, ears (which ended up making it look like a character from Arthur) and a body.

After I took the pictures I wiped it away before having to talk to a waitress about it.

Why are so many of us so socially awkward?

Day 353 - Snowman Oreo Pops! - 12/19/2015

For today's Thing-a-Day Thing I helped make some Snowman Oreo Pops!

It was a full day of baking Christmas treats with Princess Melawesome and our friend Erin!

We made lots of things like Chex Mix, scones, cookies, etc. But the most Thing-a-Day worthy Thing was the Snowman Oreo Pops!

A couple of them fell apart. We stuck them back together and they ended up looking like Cookie Monster and Grover!

They were my two favorites.

Day 352 - More Gira and Brachi Comics! - 12/18/2015

Today's Thing-a-Day Thing is 3 more Gira and Brachi Comics!

Day 351 - 10 of My Favorite Religious Christmas Songs! - 12/17/2015

Today's Thing-a-Day is a list of 10 of my favorite religious Christmas songs!

1. Emmanuel/Oh Little Town of Bethlehem - Amy Grant

My Mom had this album for as long as I can remember. It was also the first CD I ever had that was mine.

Emmanuel is my favorite song on the album and love the transition into and Amy's version of Little Town.

2. Little Town of Bethlehem - HangNail

This song is fast and fun. Plus it has my favorite guitar solo thing at the end of the song.

I only wish I could play guitar like that.

3. What Child is This - Vince Guaraldi Trio

I love all of the Charlie Brown Christmas soundtrack.

This is an instrumental track on it that I also love.

4. Hark! The Herald Angels Sing - Vince Guaraldi Trio

A vocal track from the same soundtrack.

This part of the special always makes me tear up.

5. God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen - Garth Brooks

I like how dark the tune of this song is. I also like the older-sounding words.

I try to recreate this kind of feeling in the pumpkin carols I write for Halloween.

6. It Came Upon a Midnight Clear -  Celtic Women

I like the words a lot. The tune is nice too.

7. Silent Night - Michael Buble

I like this song. I like Michael Buble.

But I'd rather sing this song with a church congregation than listen to Buble sing it.

I just needed a copy of it, and wanted to include Buble.

I like how he sings.

8. In the Bleak Midwinter - James Taylor

Another song I love, that I would rather sing than listen to.

9. Angels We Have Heard on High - Andy Williams

Another song I love!

I especially like the "Gloria" parts.

10.  Oh Holy Night! - N'Sync

There are so many versions of this song. This is my favorite.

There are so many versions that my dad decided to compile as many as he could find and make a full album of different versions.

So far he has 45 different versions.

I quite like this version as well:

Bonus:

The Only Gift - NSYNC

I forgot this song on the non-religious Christmas songs list:

I love the tune a lot. I love the silly lyrics.

And I LOVE Lance Bass's solo. They should've let him solo more often.

That's it for now!

I hope your Christmas Season is more wonderful than you could even imagine it could be!

Day 349 - Oatmeal Puppet Guy! - 12/15/2015

Today's Thing-a-Day Thing is this Oatmeal Puppet Guy I just made!

Get ready for fun! I plan to make a whole series of videos about this guy!

Oh, and keep an eye on my cafepress stores! There may be some new merch soon...

Some oatmeal-related merch...

Day 348 - Dust Bunny Tornado Vine! - 12/14/2015

Today's Thing-a-Day is this Vine I made!

It's there every day in this sad little abandoned pay phone room.

An odd little constant in my life that I think is neat.

Sort of my "American Beauty" bag in the wind video.

Day 347 - Molehill (a poem) - 12/13/2015

Today's Thing-a-Day is...

Molehill
Molehill
Mountain to be
All due to
Over sens-i-tivity

With feelings hurt
starting wars and stuff
sometimes "I'm sorry"
isn't enough.

Molehill
words said
sticks, stones, and dirt
hearts pinned to the
sleeves of our shirts.

When done wrong
we get irate
and then tend to
exaggerate.

Molehill
Molehill
trampled down
Flame burnt out.
It's just ground.

Day 346 - Hi Sam - 12/12/2015

Today's Thing-a-Day is a cover of a song from "Clarissa Explains It All"!

My own Princess Melawesome Joan Hart took lead vocals on this one.

We just started watching CEIA on Hulu. It's so full of pop culture references! I'm surprised.

I mean, Clarissa mentions They Might Be Giants in the first few minutes of the first episode!

Day 345 - Some of My Favorite Christmas Songs! - 12/11/2015

Today's Thing-a-Day is a bunch of my favorite Christmas Songs!

I will try to get 10 Christmas Songs that aren't specifically religious. We'll see if I can find that many of them on youtube.

1. Mariah Carey - All I Want for Christmas is You

This might be my favorite Christmas song. It's up there, anyway.

I've loved almost every version I've heard. I've only heard one so far that I did not like. I heard it in the restroom at the mall, and I don't know who it was by.

2.  Vince Guaraldi Trio - Christmas Time is Here

Mariah sings my favorite Christmas song with vocals. Vince played my favorite instrumental Christmas song.  So sad I had to cover the vocal version.

3. The Drifters - White Christmas

I love this song. It's almost my favorite. It's funny and well-sung at the same time.

It was in Home Alone.

4. Pep Squad - Feliz Navidad

I don't like this song for the talking at the beginning. It borders on racism, but I love the trumpet and the shouting.

5. Lost Dogs - The Chipmunk Song (Christmas Don't Be Late)

I do love the original, but the harmonies on this are lovely.

The talking in between singing parts is hokey and kind of annoying, but I love their harmonies.

6. Michael Buble - Santa Claus is Coming to Town

I love the jazzy little "You better watch out..." part near the end.

7. Zooey Deschanel and Leon Redbone - Baby It's Cold Outside

I like most versions of this song. This is my favorite.

8. Jonathan Coulton - Christmas is Interesting

I agree.

This is yet another song JoCo wrote that I wish I had written.

9. NewSong - The Christmas Shoes

JUST KIDDING!

I don't like that song at all.

9. The California Raisins - Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer

I love all of the Claymation Christmas Special.

This is the Temptations version of the song. I think directly their version, but it sounds a bit retooled to me. There is a different higher tenor part than the classic Temptations version I've heard.

I don't feel like looking it up. I'm just going by memory.

10. Paul McCartney - Wonderful Christmas Time

I hear that people hate this song. I don't understand why.

I love it!

The lyrics paint a comfy Christmas memory picture for me.

I love the idea of someone saying, "How's your holiday season going?"

and I reply, "Oh, I'm simply having a wonderful Christmas time!"

I like that idea a lot.;

That's 10!

I didn't think I'd be able to think of or find that many.

I could probably find more of my favorite non-religious Christmas songs, but 10 is a good number.

Later in the Christmas season I'll probably do a list of 10 of my favorite religious Christmas songs.

I gotta make something to fill out the rest of the year of Thing-a-Day things...
