I once went to a combination computer repair and comic shop in Bloomington, IN. I was intrigued by the concept, so I asked the owner if the majority of his money came from the comics or the computer repair. He laughed a bit and told me that the way to make a small fortune in the comic business, is to start with a large fortune. Today that statement rings truer than ever, as today marks the final day for Comic Carnival on 38th Street.
The Comic Carnival West has been a part of my life since I was around 13. I used to spend my Sundays walking there with my cousin to spend my allowance on comics. As I grew I focused on a great number of other things, but when I found myself looking to read a comic series again, it was always the first place I would look. Recently, I have gotten back into comics in a big way, and I have been making trips their with friends at least once every month.
I have been to many comic stores in my life but this one was always my favorite. I loved the aesthetic of the place. I always got the feeling that it was a comic shop for the love of comics, and not just a place that sold comics because it seemed to go well with their true passion of tabletop gaming. They always had a fair amount of the less popular fare that I find most interesting. I believe it was our own Seth, who summed it up nicely by saying that he can find something he wants to buy every time he goes in there.
I am sad to see this store go. After 13 years, having to find a new comic shop will be a bit of a shock. There are still two Stores open on the north and east side of town. I am very fond of the North side store on Keystone, and I urge everyone to go there. I would hate to see this entire chain go down
