This is the second year I've grown pumpkins in my yard for the Halloween season. But this year is also a year of firsts!
Well, one first.
This year I am also growing popcorn!
Popcorn is my absolute favorite food. And since Orville Redenbacher popcorn is grown in Indiana, I decided to buy some air pop popcorn from the store and try my luck!
Here's the first ear:
I picked it a couple weeks back because the stalk was broken and dying. I think I hit it with the lawn mower. Oops.
It looked like something had gotten to it or it hadn't had a chance to grow all of the corn kernels. But rather than throwing it away I decided to pick it and see how it dried and popped!
Today I saw that another ear looked most of the way dried out.
I picked that too! That one should pop up nicely!
Anyway, back to lil' ear.
I put it in the only paper bag I had and popped it (ha!) in the microwave.
Right after it started cooking I could smell a cooked corn smell that I don't usually get when microwaving popcorn.
Then it started smelling burnt.
It was still popping so I let it keep going until the programmed Popcorn time ran out.
Near the end white smoke started coming out of the bag.
I opened the bag to find...
Most of it popped!
The cob burned up, but the popcorn looked like popcorn!
I listed the 5 things I look forward to seeing every year at the fair.
Princess Melawesome and I went to this year's fair today. Most of the stuff from last year's list was still there so today's Thing-a-Day Thing is a list of stuff that caught my eye at the fair this year.
1. Popcorn Machine!
The first thing I saw the fair that caught my attention was this popcorn machine.
It's for sale!
Anybody want to buy it for me? It's only $500 (or best offer). I have the perfect place to put it at the Ponder Haus.
2. This Lamp!
This lamp was in the Arts building! Someone made it and submitted it to the competition. It's got black and white movie celebrities all over it, plus an old movie camera.
3. The Corn Palace!
The fair is featuring an exhibit about corn. In that exhibit there is an end of a section that's all about the Corn Palace!
This is the first of two video game-related art pieces made by people younger than me that were on display for the fair!
Good job, Alexis!
6. This Indiana Popcorn Orville Redenbacher Shirt!
I just thought it was cool. I'd wear this.
7. This See 'N Say Made Out of Cans!
All the other displays of cans were things like Minions and Wall-E and Veggie Tales. But this one was a giant See 'N Say that actually worked!
It was even distorted and hard to understand like a real See 'N Say!
8. Pumpkins!
These were big pumpkins, but not the giant pumpkins I look forward to seeing each year.
We couldn't find the giant pumpkins anywhere!
I don't know if they bring them in later in the fair or if they just won't have them this year.
Either way I'm disappointed.
9. The Carving of the Cheese Sculpture!
Every year there is a giant cheese sculpture at the fair. Usually we go to the fair just before the end so the cheese sculpture is always finished. This time I got to see them carving it!
10. Nightmare Fuel Clown Trashcan!
Jesus. Look at that thing...
11. Pac Man Art!
This was in the 4-H building. If you go to the fair this year, look for it.
And finally:
12. This Back to the Future Display!
It's cool! They recreated the clock tower and Doc's "weather experiment"!
There is even a little Marty in the Delorean and a little Doc working on the wires!
That's all the stuff that caught my eye this year!
What did you see at the fair this year?
Reminder: There are a lot of new shirts you can and should buy from the Ponder Couch Store!
1. Every college campus should have Ramen Noodle machines in the student center. They probably exist somewhere, but I did not have one in my campus center AND THAT WAS A SHAME! I think if there were a way to get ready-made ramen noodles from a vending machine, it would make the owner a lot of money.
As usual, all images that aren't photos I took are stolen from google image searches.
2. There should be more common words that start with X. That way we could have alphabet cards for school children and other people who are learning to read with pictures other than Xylophones, X-rays, and things like eXtra.
I know there are other X words out there, but they are either things that school children know nothing about or they are proper names like Xavier and Xander. Or they are attached to something commercial.
3. I would love to be able to buy Chinese Food flavored microwave popcorn. There is bacon flavored popcorn:
Cheese popcorn:
There is even popcorn that tastes like a movie theater:
Popcorn is my all-time favorite food. I also like to eat Chinese food. I would love to combine the two and have a new favorite flavor besides salt and butter.
I tried to make Chinese Food popcorn myself once with garlic salt and powdered ginger. It didn't work. There's got to be a way to do it.
That's all I have for now. More idearrhea as it floods out of me.
